The road-going T.50 was game-changing with its fan car technology. And now we have a racing version, upping downforce, power and grip to make this T.50S a true track weapon. Mike Fernie dives into the engineering of this track supercar, as well as chatting to the man himself - Professor Gordon Murray.

  • But why is the fuel tank capacity only 50 L? Is it only going to do 15 laps at a stretch? I was thinking it might have a 100 L and then with the light weight it would have the range of a GT3. Of all the numbers, this one alone has made me a little restless. Chris Harris is going to complain...

  • This is a long one but bear with me as I think I'm onto something. Most gear/petrol heads get angry and sad when these kind of cars are only going to be able to be bought by old rich people who will never drive them. They will instead let them rot away in their private collection. No, I don't hate old rich people. It's just sadly been statistically proven at this point. However, there is a solution to this is. Adopt the track car clause that some manufacturers use when it comes to their expensive/rare track cars. More companies are actually starting to do this as well which gives me hope. One way it works is that you buy the car and are the owner. However, the manufacturer holds onto the car and you're only allowed to drive it when it's taken to a track. That way the car is used the way the engineers meant it to be used and it's also taken cared of properly since the manufacturer holds onto it when you're not driving it. Another way it can work is that the company will let you hold your car, BUT you are obligated by contract to take it to a certain amount of track days per year. Some that come to mind are most Ferrari track cars like the 599XX Evolution, FXX, FXX-K and the McLaren P1 GTR. I'm sure there are others as well. The average gear/petrol head can actually witness the thing in action. The engineers can truly be proud of all the hard work they put into their creation and the owner will be narrowed down to people who will actually drive and enjoy their purchase. It's a win win situation for literally everyone.

Road car engine, Niki Lauda transmission, aero and suspension and a middle ground interior. Probably not, but I’d love to see such a thing run on Nordschleife.

I am one of those who is disappointed by Le Mans hypercar class apparently turning into just another LMP class with different name, as these cars only hints towards actual road cars, opposing to what has been advertised for a long time, still better though than LMP1 spaceships.

Is he insane? It will be nearly impossible to run on any track Melasse of noise regulations... even the LMP cars have mufflers....

  • A glickenhaus costs less and makes 2000kg df. I understand wanting it to be a track and road car but it literally doesn't have cats so it can't anyway. Why not go all out on downforce on the s if you're gonna make it illegal anyway? The glickenhaus can go on both, the compromise is it's uncomfortable but if murray was making two cars anyway I just don't get it.

    JulesJulesMánuði síðan
    • @Gavin Wyllie no but it's illegal on streets. You need cats for registration and plates. In that sense, the s is already track only so just make it for professionals only and add downforce. Glickenhaus doesn't sell to people who will crash, gordon could do the same

      JulesJulesMánuði síðan
    • The T50s isn't illegal to drive on tracks? There is a choice of 3 mufflers depending on what track you'll be driving on and what their noise level permits. He didn't want more downforce as it meant changing for heavier suspension components and bigger wheels, tyres. He wants it to handle well for anyone to drive it,not just pro racing drivers. The more downforce, the faster an accident can ocur. (It'll snap into a spin quicker) nobody bar a professional racing driver could be able to catch a spin that quickly.
