What the hell happened to the Ford GT90?

It was a legendary design that looked like it was going to get past the the concept car stage, so why didn't the Ford GT90 make it to production? Mike Fernie has done some digging to find out.

  • As much as i have fond memories of the GT90, one car stands out as even more legendary as concept than it - the Audi Avus quattro. This was a true alien spaceship to the point where now, almost 30 years later, if you just replace the light bulbs with LEDs, it still looks futuristic and like something that came from 10-20 into the future. It was the most sought-after wrapper from the Turbo bubble gums in the 90s. I traded my whole collection 100+ individual ones, just for this one and when i showed with it at school, for like 2 weeks i was the hottest news on the yard. Ferraris like F40, F355 and F50 always had special place in my heart, but the Avus, it made evolve from a boy into a man i just a moment at the age of 7.

Also jaguar wanted v12 quad turbo didnt they for the xj220 more proof when usa wants a great car it shops in uk. Cobra, Lola mk6, xj220, lotus elise all had Americans fooled as American.

  • Looks like I'm the dissenting voice. What a hideous mess of random lines at all odd angles. This illustrates how easily the aesthetic design of a midengine platform can so easily go horribly wrong. Better that they gave it a miss and gave us the 2005 GT and the 2017 GT instead.

  • I had the privilege of working on the gt90 ~6 years back when it was brought out of one private collection and sold to another. True story is that ford accidentally sold it for $1 to the first private owner as part of a lump prototype vehicle lot purchase which were to be destroyed or disassembled. This private owner had a contract with Ford for hauling and storing prototypes and show cars and was storing it at the time. When Ford realized what happened, the deal was legally done and an agreement was made that it would be forever preserved and not dismantled. I was tasked with making it run again. Petty wild setup, could clearly see where two cut up 32v 4.6 blocks were welded together into the v12. The turbos were completely fake however. The exhaust went through a turbine housing, but it was an empty turbo and the intake tract went straight from 90s Era Ford taurus air boxes to the intake manifolds. The chassis was crazy cool though, lots of billet aluminum cross members and aero tubing control arms. Whole oil pan was a billet dry sump setup also. I have pictures and a video of it running somewhere on a memory card.

  • Ford needed a technology jump in order to build the GT90. They had nothing to base it off of. And they'd soon get it by reverse engineering a Ferrari 360 Modena when building the 2005 Ford GT.

    Rob LockhartRob Lockhart2 mánuðum síðan
  • The GT90 supposedly has a drag coefficient of .32 as compared to the Veyron's .36 in top speed mode. Bob Natkin, the designer of the GT90's engine, was quoted in a 1995 issue of Motortrend as saying the 720HP figure was produced with 6-8 PSI, but was capable of 900HP with the boost turned up. This car would have held the top speed record for sure.

    KniteKnite2 mánuðum síðan
  • It had a theoretical top speed of 253. But realistically it's actual top speed was no 30 or 40 like they limited the concept to. Ford did a test with it on their track with the turbos connected. It got to 235 MPH before overheating badly. So 235 is it's actual speed. Still slower than the F1. Still it was a cool creation by Ford. Just imagine if it went through. What kind of cars we have today would be different because of the old concepts of yesterday

Forcing something like this back in the 90s would have just made Ford file for bankruptcy when the bottom fell out in 2008...
