How do you make an LMP1 car from scratch?

Designing and manufacturing a racing car of any sort is a mission, but how about an LMP1 car? With its all-carbon construction, its highly-strung twin turbo engine and its incredible aero, the Ginetta G60 LT-P1 is one of the quickest cars in the world, and Mike went behind the scenes to check out how you start from scratch to end up with a full-blooded Le Mans car.

  • Question to you experts bugging me since a long time: Why does a team like Ginetta (or Rebellion) spend all these efforts and millions for a LMP1 car, when you have to race against Porsche or Toyota with a 10x or even higher budget and advanced technology available, making it almost impossible to win against them? In other words: Why fight in a battle you can't win? My greatest respect to those teams daring it, but what's the motivation and reason behind it? Why would someone be interested in it and who pays it??

  • 0:55 You make it sound like this Ginetta is a better car than the 919, but it just isn’t. Porsche’s fastest lap at Silverstone was run in their Le Mans Spec Downforce Package, completely unsuited to the Silverstone track (it was used in Silverstone due to homologation rules that gave them an advantage with their High Downforce Package for the rest of the season). Furthermore, the 919 Evo could easily do something around 1:27. If Ginetta would be freed from restrictions they might improve by a few seconds, but theocracy has way less potential than the 919. On top of all, the car´s race performances have been absolutely atrocious. I don’t want to act like a butthurt 919 fanboy, just trying to set the facts straight :)

  • I cry when I look at the way WEC destoryed Prototype racing. They repeated the mistake Group C made in the early 90s when they allowed costs to get out of control and while Audi was because of diseilgate, the loss of Porsche was a massive blow that could have been avoided if costs stayed low. And the way they've reacted to this is disgraceful with resorting to handicaps which makes building a good car pointless and makes drivers not want to win. On top of that the le mans hypercars have been botched, they should have followed the IMSA model with cheap altered LMP2 cars but they instead have this wired mix of road and prototype cars that are now become a pointless formula because they'll be BOPed with the DPIs. LMP2 is terrible too, you kick out engine manufacturers for no reason to than need them back because your LMP1 is gone with them, just terrible.

  • It's a shame that these things have been killed off. This was the future of LMP1. Ditching the overly complex, and ludicrously priced Hybrids and going with cars built like these. Simplified, cheaper, but nearly as fast around a lap but faster in a straight line. I guess we have to deal with the LMH stuff now instead. It's sad really.

How does design evolve from one gen to another (for example do they want to solve specific issues from last years car or there is new aero ideas etc.)? Things like how to get incremental improvements, but also major goals/targets set by team principal.

  • I disagree with your opening premise to this video, namely that it is so difficult to produce a vehicle like this compared to road cars. Reason? Road cars have so many compromises to contend with - some of which are frivalties like styling, of which a race car has none of. The only compromises a race car has (other than monetary budget) is the set of rules it operates in. Given all the compromises and being able to now have saloon cars that can do 0-60 times in high 2 seconds, low 3 second Mark's, road cars are a much tougher proposition, but they do owe some tech to racing.

    C McculloughC Mccullough8 mánuðum síðan
    • @C Mccullough The ginetta beat the time set by the porsche 919 in 2017 but also the time set by toyota to take pole in 2017. But in 2019 the ginetta took 1.2 seconds from the fastest toyota. There are several explanations for this performance gap. First of all the track was resurfaced which made it faster, the current aerodynamic rules were put in place in 2017 so the cars have also evolved in 2 years and have become faster (what we see with the time of the toyota in 2019). And anyway if the ginetta manages to beat the time of the 919 by just one tenth in qualifying the hybrid cars, although older (for the porsche) are unbeatable in traffic thanks to their 1000 horsepower at the beginning of the acceleration.
