Does a Chevy NASCAR have any similarities with a Camaro ZL1 road car?

They are called stock cars, but is there even the slightest 'stock' thing about them? We travelled to Charlotte Motor Speedway to check out Chevrolet's latest NASCAR entry, comparing it with the brutal Hendricks Motorsport Camaro ZL1.

Do you know what drag is? Do you know if you had less down force you may be going even faster, but down force is more for cornering. It sounds he has no idea what he's talking about. • @2:20 hi, mechanical engineer here. The reason American performance cars (at the moment) use superchargers over turbochargers is because the engine displacement is quite massive relative to most cars from other places (6.2L ain't tiny!). The LT/LS series of engines, the HEMIs, etc, are all slow revving large displacement engines. This means generating enough exhaust gasses to spool a turbo the size you would use on an engine like this takes a *lot* longer. This creates the devil we all know as turbo lag. Basically, these engines would suffer from turbo lag far more than their European equivalents. No problem! These engines have amazing engineering all their own. The LT2 is an awesome piece of work, putting out that 490hp, at a mere 26inches in height, at a competitive weight, and all the torque, etc- contrary to popular opinion, these are NOT low tech engines! But because of that large displacement, if you want a great experience, you'll need a supercharger to force feed the car without lag. If you pay close attention you'll notice all large displacement European v8s (like those in the AMGs from a few years ago) ALSO use superchargers for this very reason. If all you want is power to go crazy and don't necessarily care about a great "driving experience," sure. Go turbo and go mad!

If I were to pick from their available lineup, I'd take that and as many insurance forms as Clarkson used during the New Zealand Corolla vs. Racing Sailboat special. If I were to pick anything though, it would be the 190E Evo II or the Volvo 240 in the Nordica Livery they used during BTCC era racing. Either those or a Ford-era V60 Polestar in matte light blue. They're pleasant cars to look at.

  • There is a no such thing as a NASCAR. NASCAR is a sanctioning body, not a car. If they need to distinguish one their cars from others, they say things like “Cup car” or ‘Xfinity series car.” Nothing exposes a newb who didn’t do his research more than referring to one of the cars as “a NASCAR.”

  • Why won't you do a DTM vs the road version of the cars in DTM? Hmmmm. BTCC? Hmmm. What tube frame race car has anything to do with it's road car version these days in any series? Only low grade touring car series' and at best even those only share the metal body and nothing else (like BTCC and GT4). Look at the Australian V8 Supercars series, DTM, Nascar, IMSA, LMS, ELMS, ALMS, etc. At least Nascar uses V8s in cars that have V8s on the street (aside from the Camry obviously). DTM is using 2.0L turbo engines that have nothing to do with their road car versions, huge ass wings, wide bodies, massively larger brakes, different suspension and so on lol. Same goes for GT3 and GTE at this point. Huge wings and splitters, motors aren't the same as the street version, massive diffusers, completely different brakes (which are adjustable, unlike the road versions of the cars), multiple engine maps, etc., etc.

Because his Ford is lighter but also puts its power to the ground a lot better than the wheel spinning tank Camaro, I'm highly confident that my mate's car would be crossing the quarter mile tape at least one second before your slug Camaro's there. And to think, my mate's Falcon isn't the quickest one currently zooming around on Australian roads either! There are FG-X XR6 Turbos all over the country - every one of them 100% street legal - which would annihilate that Camaro all ends up! In a nice way, shove your shitbox up your ass!

No one wants to buy new cars these days and this is why. There is nothing to look forward to. It’s no longer about the car. It’s about how good the team is. Winning on simple pit times, whether they can get one additional lap out of the tires, and so on. This is not what sells cars.

    • @Roger Dodger Why would IRS suck? Why would a car without a differential be better for turning? Drag racers use them to go in a straight line, but most motorsports that involve turning (even if it's only turning left) like being able to make the same adjustments at all 4 corners. NASCAR must agree because I see that they're getting IRS _and_ LSD in 2021. Who said anything about leaf springs? You do know that NASCAR used stock Chevy C10 rear trailing arms when the rules said that a certain percentage of the car had to be "stock" right? They may be using tubular now, but it's the same geometry as the old C10.

  • It's not even bespoke. The motor has very tight specs that prevent innovation and even manufacturer's actual stock product. For instance, Toyota has a stock V-8 that they weren't allowed to use, and they had build their motors to US push rod 2 valve junk tech. Their stock motor built with a race tune could chop a cup motor but we'll never get to see it.

Looking forward to the gen 7 which will modernise the car somewhat with independent rear suspension and bigger wheels.

    DubSe7enDubSe7en9 mánuðum síðan
    • @Roger Dodger I thought gen 7 was about increasing mechanical grip and reducing aero dependancy or at least using the underside more using ground effect (the rear diffuser etc) I want to go back to low downforce myself, 👍

      DubSe7enDubSe7en9 mánuðum síðan
    • Absolutely see what you're saying, but this current idea of high downforce low power is rubbish. The cars are too aero sensitive and the lack of momentum means they inch past each other. If they could just rely less on aero that would help with the close racing everyone seems to be after. Gen 7 might not work (I can't see why it won't though) but better than stagnation

      DubSe7enDubSe7en9 mánuðum síðan
    • @Roger Dodger you stay in the past then. I can't see how improving mechanical grip will hurt the sport. What other vehicles use 15 inch wheels? And a live rear axle? (apart from trucks)

      aa8 mánuðum síðan
    • F1 running insane amounts of downforce has ruined the sport though. F1 drivers complain that they burn their front tires out within a few laps if they follow someone who is one second ahead of them because of the downforce dependency. Then you have nascar with half the races a year finishes with two or three drivers door to door across the finish line. And yes, nascar cup cars do indeed produce a lot of downforce for a car with no wings. It wasn't a comparison to F1 lol. Another thing is nascar drivers don't have to conserve tires based on how far behind they are from the next car, because the sport doesn't depend on downforce like F1 does. They can race each other balls to the walls every single lap. F1 stopped being like that decades ago. Which is nascar views are going up and F1 views are going down. People want to watch racing. The trash about "but they only turn left" doesn't work anymore. People want to see a good race. They don't care about the track. Look at Monaco. People get erect over Monaco. Yet every year it is the most boring racing of the entire season. They can't even race wheel to wheel because the track isn't wide enough for the cars no lol
