This is how you develop a V12 from a 3-cylinder engine

It hopefully won't be long until we have two brand new V12 hypercars on the market - the Aston Martin Valkyrie and the Gordon Murray T.50 fan car. But the engines in these cars have more humble beginnings than you might think. Mike Fernie explains!

Over 90% of the land used for crops are use to feed the animals, reduce that, plant more trees and you have a considerable ammount of results than just making euro 6 engines, its basically doing nothing, every year more cars are put on the streets and less old cars get off of them, so the we are basically standing still in the race for a green future

  • For anyone unclear on what Mike's not allowed to say: The basic story goes like this: they first chopped a cylinder off the I4 used in the Jaguar C-X75 to make an I3 development unit, then added a second I3 connected to the same crank to make the V6 Nissan wanted for their LMP1 car. They then modified its design for developing the Valkyrie's V12, applying the same principle as they did with the LMP1 V6 on a bigger scale. What Mike isn't allowed to say explicitly is that the prototype I3 used to develop the Valkyrie's V12 is based on the same I3 used to design the Nissan LMP1 V6, and by extension the I4 from the Jaguar C-X75. Cosworth likely doesn't want people implying that they don't design everything from scratch - which is more of an open secret than anything, but for such a bespoke engineering company, I guess I can see why.

    GintaPPE1000GintaPPE10005 mánuðum síðan
    • 99.9% of engine design is derivative and iterative anyway to be fair. Cosworth, Ricardo and various other contractors have standard architectures they'll go with to scale up to whatever the contract wants. As you say it's kind of an open secret because people who understand production engineering don't care, but the fantasists will get foamy at the mouth

  • Really interesting and well explained post and I think you have also inadvertently explained something else in the motoring world that I found interesting as well. Christian Koenigsegg recently developed a very clever little 3Cyl engine that showed off his electronic valve system he has developed. The fact that it was three cylinder seems to fit in nicely with your explanation of things - do you think there is something there? It can’t be a coincidence surely?

  • Emission regulations are so dumb. Low production sports/supercars should be excluded from any regulations. Even the most emitting supercars from all brands would emit less co2 and toxic substances than all vw golfs on the market and thats only one model out of hundreds daily driver cars
