How the Fast & Furious franchise created a whole new generation of petrolheads

If you're of a certain age, the Fast & Furious franchise will have potentially had a huge impact on the way you view cars. Along with games like Need For Speed, this movie franchise changed how people looked at especially Japanese machinery, up against the classic American muscle cars of the past.

I mean I like the cars, but it’s not about that… It’s about three friends who love and hate each other on their adventures all over the world…

  • Tokyo Drift was the best imo + you had my boy Tanner Foust doing a lot of the stunts and crazy driving. Fast and Furious and 2 Fast 2 Furious also have a place in my heart! Anything after Tokyo Drift is just meh. Favorite car in the series, probably have to say the lime green Mitsubishi Evo VII that Paul Walker drove in 2 Fast 2 Furious. (R.I.P.)✌️ That car in particular made me fall in love with Evos in general, but my favorite gen is the IX. I know the learning Evo from Tokyo Drift is a IX and I love it too, but despite being very nice looking car, It was turned it into RWD, and that's just not how a Evo should be. 😂

Was a truck guy ( small midwest town) until just after this movie and someone explained what a Ferrari Enzo was and could do, circa 2004.

I don't enjoy the general series, but the specials where just perfect and I want more of them specials they had back then, like: Get any car, drive through any countries and make the cars do it to the end. And expecially the modifications. :D

  • The amount of influence the F&F release had on car culture is quite honestly in-quantifiable, everything changed across the country. Immediately under glow lights, cold air intakes, free flowing exhausts, lowering springs, and a huge range of other things were on every young gear heads mind. Also with the easy to come by credit and not yet crazy cost of living of the early 2000s it allowed people with "normal" cars to have some fun and show off as well... without having to buy an expensive American Classic. Not great movies by any stretch, but what those movies DID for the automotive world is unlike any film before it. It. Changed. Everything.

It's a shame that in the more recent movies they let go of the tuner-culture-feeling. No one is waiting for more explosions and world savings.

  • The best thing about the later films in my opinion was that they used different people's perceptions of cool cars, we all love a 68 charger, or an s2000 but using a Jensen Interceptor and ford escorts from the 70s really opened up the range of generations as now it appealed to us generation x'ers who grew up on British boy racer cars. Personally I'm ready for the next movie that might catch a glimpse of an old Capri or a real Mini....

  • My favourite will always be the original movie. Sure the story was cliché but it's main focus was on the cars, as it was in the second and third films. From 4 onwards (as much as I love them all and would happily rewatch them) are basically just over the top action movies with some nice cars. I still love them though. over-the-top action films
