Can we convince James May to buy a Mini Electric?

The first electric Mini is probably going to become an incredibly important car as the world shifts to electrification. But James May made that plunge years ago when he bought a BMW i3. So can Tim convince him that he should 'upgrade' to the Mini E?

  • If i could choose any 3 cars in the world for free i would choose the Tesla Model S, Golf GTI & this Mini Electric (i am 13 so i guess the Mini is kinda loved by the youth? But idk how many ppl agree) and no i wouldn't choose expensive cars to sell etc. etc. because i am just being realistic! Expensive cars get more expensive over time for the owner or something (im just a dude without any knowledge about economy lol)

  • Until such time as an electric car can do the same as my mondeo ie I can fill the boot with my camping gear have it fully charged get on the boat from Rosslare to Cherbourg with 5 adults and not have to worry about stopping until I get to the Vendee, until then and only then will I change from diesel to electric and no iim not interested in saving the environment unless it can do that and do what I need as a mode of transport

    Ben ThomassonBen Thomasson7 mánuðum síðan
  • Hi James, I totally agree with your comments about the batteries and range/charging time. I have been saying EXACTLY the same for years. before the range would double, And the charging time would be close to filling a petrol tank, there is no use for it. Well, maybe hybrid, which can self charge are the way to go, but not only electric. If I get stuck without petrol, I can take a jerrycan out of my boot, fill few litters, and go on (& it happened) But with an electric car, you are pretty much f@cked... Cheers, Noam, ISRAEL.

If you can get 4to5 hundred miles and charge fully in under 20 minutes almost anywhere. You'll have a real market for these awesome toys!

  • Liked Tim's presentation. Very well done, entertaining, interesting, etc just a shame he picked the Mini (as I have a totally irrational HATRED of them because the whole point of the MINI was that it was SMALL, the current mini IS NOT SMALL it's almost as big as the Honda Civic, hence calling it a MINI IS STUPID !!!! Stop trying to jump on the band wagon (BMW) & just call it something else !!, but as for Tim, great job, well done.

  • 6:35 I love how James likes the over head switches which are a bit fancy and don't make sense in a car... given his very first Top Gear appearance reviewed an old Bentley T2, and he made a point about how the positioning of all the dials and switches made no sense, so he of course liked it. Shows how James maintains his authentic opinion.

  • I haven't been in the electric, but have driven several Coopers as hire cars, all with between 2-3000 on the clock, my most enduring memory is that yor forward view is akin to looking through a letterbox, at 6' tall I had to bend down at traffic lights so I could see when they change. It drives okay as long as there are no passengers, but 4 adults in there and its quite gutless. Truly I would never, ever want to own one. Tim though is a good presenter.

  • It's probably a bit too late now for this idea to be feasible, but my solution to the battery problem which I have given some thought to is that if all electric cars had the same battery, most likely regulated by the government, and if this battery were to fit under the car, as most of them do for low center of gravity, my idea would be when you pull into a "charge station" you drive into a lane, which then removes the battery from under the car, it drops down via a mechanism fitted in the lane, you then roll forward (the lane has a slight incline) to where there is a fully charged battery ready and waiting, it raises up into your car, locks in position and you drive off, possibly even faster than filling a petrol car. The flat battery you left behind then starts to charge ready for the next person who comes along. Potentially the way it would work i that you buy the car, but not the battery, instead you buy the "right to use the battery's" which are available as part of buying the car.

    w Twymanw Twyman8 mánuðum síðan
  • Also once there are many millions of battery powered electric cars, there will be billions of Lithium Ion batteries. Big ones. Then we won't be able to pretend anymore, that there is no problem.
